Hot Air

Hot Air is a touching, funny and beautiful piece of theatre with music. It celebrates the people of Bristol through the focus of one of the city’s most legendary industries: hot air ballooning.

This new play, informed by in-depth interviews with the ballooning community, will be performed at the Tobacco Factory Theatre this summer by a professional cast of ten.

Six o’clock on a summer’s morning, flying out over the countryside and it’s just peaceful, beautiful. In this basket you’ve got three-sixty vision. It gives you amazing perspective and freedom. Gaze down at the people below and you think “look at them scurrying about down there… poor sods.”

The play captures a day in the life of the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, beginning with the peaceful early morning mass ascent and ending with the riotous "night glow". As the Fiesta’s iconic balloons pass noiselessly above the city landscape, the action of the play throws the joys and struggles of those left on the ground into sharp relief.

Based on an original concept by Heather Williams (co-director of ACH Smith’s Up the Feeder Down the ‘Mouth and Back Again and director of Catherine Johnson’s Suspension – Bristol Old Vic), the play is written by Mike Akers (Treasure Island and Peter Pan – Bristol Old Vic), with original music by Kieran Buckeridge, movement direction by Michelle Gaskell, design by Chris Gylee and lighting design by Michael Straun & Matthew Graham. Pilot and balloon artist, Dave McGibbon, is acting as consultant and adviser to the production.

Hot Air promises to be comic, moving and ultimately inspirational.  A comprehensive programme of events, including workshops for children and vulnerable young people, relaxed performances, art exhibitions and talks, will accompany the production.  (See Hot Air workshops & events)

The play will run at the Tobacco Factory Theatre between 25 July and 10 August.  Book online here or ring the Tobacco Factory on 0117 902 0344.
